그제 우리 쪽 서해 해상에서 불법조업을 하던 중국 어선의 선원 한 명이 숨지는 일이 벌어졌다. 불법조업 단속 과정에서 중국 선원이 해경의 무기에 맞아 숨진 것은 처음이다. 아직 최종 조사결과가 나오진 않았지만, 해경은 쇠톱과 칼 등을 휘두르며 단속에 저항하는 중국 어부들을 진압하는 과정에서 한 명이 고무탄에 맞아 숨졌다고 설명하고 있다. 경위야 어찌됐든 경찰의 무기에 외국 선원이 숨진 것은 매우 불행한 일이다. 심심한 조의를 표한다.
중국 정부는 외교 경로를 통해 이번 사건에 대한 강한 우려와 불만의 뜻을 전했다. 중국 선원이 처음 해경의 진압 장비에 의해 숨진 만큼 중국 정부가 사안을 중요하게 보고 있다는 뜻일 것이다. 정부는 중국 정부의 움직임이 아니더라도 철저한 진상조사와 함께 법과 상식에 따라 사건 처리에 최대한 성의를 보여줘야 한다.

Need to get to the bottom of Chinese fisherman’s death
On Oct. 16, a Chinese fisherman was killed in the West Sea while fishing illegally in South Korean waters. This is the first time a Chinese crewman has died from a wound inflicted by Coast Guard officers cracking down on illegal fishing. The final investigation findings are not yet out, but the Coast Guard has said that one person was killed by a rubber bullet during an operation to subdue Chinese fishermen who were fighting their officers with saws and knives. However it happened, it is tragic that a foreign sailor has died at the hands of South Korean police, and we offer our sincerest condolences.
The Chinese government has relayed a message of great concern and dismay over the incident through its diplomatic channels. Whatever Beijing chooses to do, Seoul needs to investigate the matter thoroughly and make a sincere attempt to resolve the situation according to law and common sense.
