정부가 4대강 후속 사업으로 3조원 가까운 예산을 들여 건천 및 도시하천 정비 작업을 추진할 계획이라고 한다. 서울의 청계천처럼 강물을 도심의 건천에 끌어들여 친수구역을 조성하겠다는 것이다. 이 정권이 끝나기 전에 4대강 사업과 관련된 토목공사를 이어가고 싶어 안달이 난 모양인데, 예산 낭비와 생태 파괴가 불 보듯 뻔하므로 당장 그만둬야 한다.
4대강 각 수계에서 확보된 물을 취수보, 취수탑으로 끌어올려 파이프를 통해 도시 하천에 흘려보내는 방식으로 물을 순환시키겠다는 게 정부 계획이다. 4대강 사업이 수질 오염과 보의 안전성 문제로 논란이 끊이지 않는 마당에 버젓이 후속 사업을 구상하고 있다는 것 자체가 놀랍고 충격적이다.

We don't need another money-wasting rivers project
As a follow-up effort for the Four Major Rivers Project, the government is now planning "servicing" for dry and urban streams, an effort with a price tag of almost 3 trillion won (US$2.7 billion). The idea is to transform dry urban streams into "hydrophilic" areas like Seoul's Cheonggye Stream by bringing river water to dry streams in urban areas. Apparently, the Lee Myung-bak administration is anxious to get the shovels out once again before the end of its term. This is an obvious waste of money and a threat to the ecosystem, and it should be stopped at once."
The government's plan involves using water from the systems of the four main rivers (the Han, Nakdong, Geum, and Yeongsan), drawing it in via intake weirs and towers before piping it into urban streams. It is nothing short of shocking to see plans for a follow-up when the original project has been the subject of non-stop controversy over water quality deterioration and the safety of its weirs.
