During a training course for public welfare workers, a university professor delivered a talk that contained denigrating remarks directed at South Korea’s former presidents who have since passed away.
The remarks, captured on take, are filled with language that would make a sailor blush. The professor used profanities to describe late President Roh Moo-hyun, who died a just over one year ago, and said, “The guy did this [expletive] to himself. Why is everyone going on and on about his ‘passing’?” During his talk, the professor failed to speak with a minimal level of etiquette toward deceased individuals. The professor called late President Kim Dae-jung “a truly laughable president” and said, “It is just a good thing we did not become Communist.”
The vicious remarks did not stop with the two former presidents. The professor also insulted Democratic Labor Party (DLP) Chairman Kang Ki-kab and heaped scorn on Democratic Party Lawmakers Park Jie-won and Chung Dong-young, as well as former Grand National Party Chairwoman Park Geun-hye, and said, “Everyone who has met Kim Il-sung or Kim Jong-il is dead.” Abusive words that would lead one to question the speaker’s character even if spoken in private were flagrantly delivered during an event with hundreds of people in attendance.
The professor in question reportedly served as a special aide for President Lee Myung-bak during his presidential campaign. He has been active issuing statements from the far right, contributing several columns to conservative newspapers. What this situation has revealed is that the inner substance of those statements is ultimately nothing more than profanity and hatred. It is disappointing that he went on this shameless rampage wearing the cloak of conservatism.
This is not, however, an isolated incident. Those attending national security education during reserve forces training and civil defense instruction have reportedly also head talks that could be perceived as pushing one ideology or siding with the administration and ruling party.
In other words, speakers with biased viewpoints to share are forcing people to listen to the same type of stale uncompromising logic that may have gone over during an authoritarian administration thirty or forty years ago. If the idea was that by making such statements they could control the people’s way of thinking, this is simply an absurd anachronism.
Like soldiers, public welfare workers, reserve officers and the like are in a position where they cannot simply refuse education put together by the administration. There have been signs that this public welfare training course will be mandatory for all workers within three months of placement at their workplace.
Reports indicated that the professor who started this controversy even prefaced his talk with a threat, saying, “Anyone who feels like giving their two cents on what I say will be reported to the Ministry of National Defense and they will pay dearly. You do not want me to draw up a list.”
This is why it is impossible not to suspect that the training course that became a profane tirade was coordinated at the very least under the tacit consent of Lee Myung-bak administration authorities, if not under their authority. Such forcible infusion of tendentious political arguments during an employment training period cannot become common practice. It must immediately come to an end.
저질 ‘안보세뇌교육’ 부활하는가
공익근무요원 소양교육에서 한 대학교수가 고인이 된 전직 대통령을 비하하는 강연을 했다. 녹음된 발언 내용은 차마 입에 담기 민망한 욕설 일색이다. 서거 1주기를 맞은 노무현 전 대통령에 대해선 “지 혼자 ×× 걸 가지고 왜 서거라고 난리냐”고 말한다. 고인에 대한 최소한의 예의도 없다. 김대중 전 대통령에 대해선 “참 우스운 대통령”이라며 “공산화 안 된 것만도 다행”이라고 매도한다.
험구는 두 전직 대통령에 그치지 않는다. 강기갑 민주노동당 대표에 대해선 “그 ×× 같은 것이…”라고 비하하고, 박지원·정동영 민주당 의원과 박근혜 전 한나라당 대표를 거명하며 “김일성이나 김정일을 만나고 온 사람은 다 죽었다”고 ‘저주’를 퍼붓는다. 사석에서 해도 인격을 의심받을 만한 막말을 수백명을 대상으로 한 교육에서 보란듯이 한 것이다.
이런 말을 한 교수는 지난 대통령선거에서 이명박 후보의 특별보좌역을 지냈다고 한다. 일부 보수신문에 칼럼도 기고하는 등 보수 성향의 주장을 활발하게 펴온 사람이다. 그런 주장의 속살이 결국 욕설과 증오뿐인 것으로 이번에 드러났다. 그러고서도 보수를 참칭하며 부끄럼도 모르고 설쳐댔으니 한심할 따름이다.
이런 일이 이번 한 번만은 아닐 터이다. 예비군 훈련이나 민방위 교육마다 실시되는 안보교육에서도 일방적인 사상 강요나 정권·여당 편들기로 들릴 만한 강연을 듣는 경우가 자주 있다고 한다. 편향된 사고를 지닌 강사가 30~40년 전 권위주의 정권 때나 통했을 법한 낡은 흑백논리를 강요한다는 것이다. 그런 식으로 해서 국민의 생각을 통제할 수 있다고 생각했다면 터무니없는 시대착오가 아닐 수 없다.
공익근무요원이나 예비군 등은 군인과 마찬가지로 정부가 짜놓은 교육을 거부하기 어려운 처지다. 이번 공익근무요원 소양교육도 근무처 배정 뒤 3개월 안에 의무적으로 받아야 할 교육이라고 한다. 막말 논란을 일으킨 교수는 강의를 시작하면서 ‘내 말에 토를 다는 사람은 국방부에 신고해서 혼내줬다. 명단을 적어 내면 안 좋을 것’이라는 ‘위협’까지 했다고 한다. ‘막말 교육’이 정부 당국의 묵인이나 주도 아래 이뤄져온 것이 아닌지 의심할 수밖에 없는 이유다. 그런 식으로 편향적인 정치적 주장을 일방적으로 주입하도록 강제하는 게 정상적일 수도 없다. 당장 중단해야 한다.
