Japanese Foreign Ministry documents have confirmed that when Japan signed the Korea-Japan treaty of 1965, it determined that former “comfort women” and conscripted laborers could still file individual suits for damages. This decision must be reflected in ongoing suits in Japan regarding victims of conscripted labor, and we hope it also becomes an opportunity for the Japanese government to acknowledge a broad responsibility for the victims of Japanese imperialism.
일본은 일제 피해자에 대한 책임 인정해야
일본이 1965년 한일협정 체결 당시 군대위안부나 강제징용 피해자의 개인 청구권을 인정하는 판단을 하고 있었음이 일본 외무성 문서로 확인됐다. 현재 일본에서 이뤄지는 징용 피해자의 소송 등에 이런 사실이 반영돼야 하는 것은 물론, 일본 정부가 일제 피해자에 대한 책임을 폭넓게 인정하는 계기가 되길 바란다.
