The government says it is considering issuing free energy coupons and
extending oil subsidies. It’s a good thing, too, because the government
has finally taken a step toward helping low-income, small business owners.
However, the government is still in a passive mode, as if it’s taking
things easy, given the fact that many people are feeling the crunch of
soaring oil prices. If the government is unable to cut oil-related taxes,
as it says it will, then it should provide practical support by allocating
oil tax revenues worth 30 trillion won (US$29 billion) a year.

정부가 에너지 바우처 제도 도입과 유가 보조금 기한 연장을 검토하기로 했다고
한다. 정부가 영세 사업자의 부담을 덜어주기 위해 대책 마련에 나선 것은
다행이다. 그렇지만, 기름값 급등으로 이들이 겪고 있는 고통에 비하면 정부의
대응은 안이할 정도로 소극적이다. 유류 관련 세금을 낮추기 어렵다면, 30조원에
이르는 유류세 일부의 지출 목적을 변경해서라도 사회통합 차원에서 실질적인
지원이 이뤄지도록 해야 할 것이다.
