At least 10,000 people have been killed and, according to Chinese government reports, hundreds of thousands more have lost their homes due to a powerful earthquake that hit Sichuan Province on May 12. However, considering the fact that the earthquake destroyed roads and disrupted communications in about 10 Chinese provinces, it has become more difficult to assess the losses and the scale of damage is anticipated to be much bigger. Rescue teams still can’t provide aid to several regions, including Wenchuan, the epicenter of the earthquake, in which the whereabouts of more than 60,000 residents have not yet been reported.

중국 정부는 그제 쓰촨성에서 발생한 강진으로 최소한 1만여 명이 목숨을 잃고 수십만명이 삶의 터전을 상실했다고 밝혔다. 그러나 중국 10여 성에 영향을 끼친 이번 지진으로 곳곳에 도로가 끊기고, 통신이 두절돼 피해상황이 제대로 집계되지 않는 점을 고려하면 피해 규모는 훨씬 더 클 것으로 예상된다. 주민 6만여명이 소재 파악이 안 되고 있는 진앙지인 원촨현을 비롯해 아직도 구조단이 접근하지 못한 지역도 여럿 있다.
