President Lee Myung-bak’s approval ratings have dropped to 28 percent,
according to the results of a survey conducted by the ruling Grand National
Party’s Yeouido Institute on May 5. It is clear that Lee’s low ratings
have been caused, in part, by the current turmoil over resumption of U.
S. beef imports. However, this incident alone cannot explain such a sudden
drop in Lee’s ratings at such an early stage of his term. According to
surveys conducted in April, the figure was already down at around 30 percent.
For this reason, Lee and Cheong Wa Dae, or the Blue House, need to understand
the significance of his declining popularity.
이 대통령, 위기의 본질을 제대로 봐야
이명박 대통령의 지지율이 28%까지 떨어졌다고 한다. 다른 곳도 아니고 한나라당
여의도연구소의 5일 자체 조사 결과다. 미국산 쇠고기 파문이 지지율 급락을
가져온 직접 원인임엔 분명하다. 그러나 단지 이 사안 하나만으로 임기 초반의
대통령 지지율이 이렇게까지 떨어진 걸 설명하기는 어렵다. 이미 지난달 여러
조사에서 이 대통령의 지지율은 30%대로 추락했다. 이명박 대통령과 청와대가
낮은 지지율의 의미를 똑바로 봐야 하는 이유가 여기에 있다.
