There is a talk of restoring Sungnyemun, also known as Namdaemun or South Gate, less than 24 hours after the gate was completely destroyed by fire. The Cabinet, politicians and the Cultural Heritage Administration are speaking about a plan for the restoration. President-elect Lee Myung-bak emphasized a “need to restore the gate as soon as possible to soothe the people’s sense of loss.” This kind of talk is stunning. It is too early to discuss the restoration of our cultural heritage.
지금이 복원을 들먹일 땐가
숭례문이 잿더미가 되고서 채 24시간도 지나지 않아 복원 이야기가 나온다. 국무회의가 거론하고, 정치권이 꺼내고, 문화재청이 복원 계획을 내민다. 이명박 당선인은 “국민의 허전한 마음을 달래기 위한 이른 시간 내 복원”을 강조하기도 했다. 지금 복원 운운하는 게 급한가.
