Yesterday the Cabinet promulgated the bill to appoint an independent counsel on Lee Myung-bak. Lee’s party, the Grand Nationals, called on President Roh Moo-hyun to veto the bill, calling it unconstitutional and invoking the need for national unity, but the president did not agree. His decision not to was the right one. What the people want to know is not what political elements best stand to benefit from an independent counsel, but what the truth is. And it would have been like committing a sin against history for the president to have turned a bill passed in a normal fashion by the National Assembly into nothing more than a piece of trash.
정치권은 더이상 ‘이명박 특검’ 흔들지 않길
어제 정부가 국무회의에서 이른바 ‘이명박 특검법’을 공포하기로 의결했다. 위헌 시비와 국민통합 논리를 앞세워 한나라당이 대통령의 거부권 행사를 요구했으나 받아들이지 않은 것이다. 당연한 결정이다. 국민의 관심사는 특검이 어느 정치세력에게 더 이로우냐가 아니라, 진실이 무엇이냐다. 정상적으로 국회를 통과한 법을 대통령이 휴지로 만들었다면 역사에 죄를 짓는 일이 되었을 것이다.
