Yesterday, Creative Korea Party presidential candidate Moon Kook-hyun officially proposed to United New Democratic Party candidate Chung Dong-young that one between the two of them be chosen to represent the progressive camp in the upcoming election. Chung agreed, and the elders of civil society have commenced working on a proposal and standards for how to go about the selection process, so the discussion is about to begin in earnest.
Both men are advocates for democracy and reform, and both are calling on people to “oppose corrupt elements from taking power.” There is considerable overlap among their supporters. The policies they talk about are, in terms of their values and vision, such that there is no real reason why they cannot work together. Many voters have surely been feeling anxious about the fact each of them has been going it alone, so talk about having one of them withdraw and just one of them run gives these voters hope.
As both candidates themselves have noted, if the country is going to prevent “corrupt elements from taking power,” the harsh fact of the matter is that there is no other choice but to narrow the alternatives down to one of the two of them. If in this process they are also able to show the country a vision that is persuasive, the candidate chosen could enjoy more support than their combined current approval ratings. That would also bring the campaign into a higher level of healthy public discussion, it having so far been a campaign in which candidates have not been standing off over actual policy.
This makes the process of choosing one candidate the most important issue. If “singling” (danilhwa) their candidacies is going to be a “solidarity of vision” instead of a superficial, momentary alignment of politicians with interests, there will need to be some frank self-reflection and serious thinking. If many in the country are thinking “corruption is better than incompetence,” they cannot move a single step forward without reflecting on what it is progressives have done to make public opinion turn that way. Aligning their candidacies loses its meaning if they cannot agree on what they will do and how they will do it once they have combined their strength. In other words, they cannot approach it by saying “I am right and you are wrong” or “I’m the only one who can win.” Voters will ignore them if they attack and seek fault with each other.
The discussion on choosing one candidate between them could be the last opportunity the elements they represent get. If they fail at this, the chaotic division they find themselves in will be far worse than it is now because of the resulting frustration and disappointment. It will lead to the fall of the “democratic reformist” forces. Achieving a breakthrough via talk about narrowing it down to just one of them is only going to be possible if they actually succeed at doing so. Such will be the case with the presidential election this month and for the post-election future.
This is why there is no reason for them to hesitate to make the right decision, once they confirm where it is their ideas connect and in which direction they want to go. They will not impress voters if they wait around for opinion poll results or try to maneuver for position based on what political advantages there are to be had after the election. They need to assume the deadline for this is December 13, when absentee voting begins.
정동영-문국현, 사심없는 결단만이 살 길이다
문국현 창조한국당 대통령 후보가 어제 정동영 대통합민주신당 후보에게 후보 단일화를 제안했다. 정 후보가 이에 찬동했고 시민사회 원로들도 단일화 방안과 기준 마련에 나섰다니, 곧 본격적인 논의가 시작될 것이다.
두 후보는 모두 민주와 개혁을 표방하고 “부패세력 집권 반대”를 주장하는 등의 공통점을 지니고 있다. 지지층도 상당부분 겹친다. 내세우는 정책을 봐도 두 후보가 가치와 비전을 같이하지 못할 이유를 딱히 찾기 어렵다. 상당수 유권자들에겐 이런 두 후보가 각개약진을 하는 모습이 안타까웠을 것이다. 이번 단일화 논의가 이들에게 희망이 되는 까닭이다.
두 후보 말대로 “부패세력의 집권”을 막으려면 지금으로선 단일화 말고 다른 방안을 찾기 힘든 게 엄연한 현실이다. 국민을 설득할 수 있는 비전을 함께 내놓는 단일화라면 두 사람의 지지율을 합친 것 이상의 관심을 모을 수 있다. 이는 정책 대결이 실종된 이번 대선을 한층 건강한 공론으로 이끄는 계기가 될 것이다.
그러려면 단일화 과정이 무엇보다 중요하다. 단일화가 정치인들만의 이합집산이 아닌 ‘비전 연대’가 되기 위해선, 진솔한 반성과 진지한 모색이 함께해야 한다. ‘무능보다 부패가 낫다’는 게 지금 많은 국민의 생각이라면 이런 현실을 만든 데 대한 반성 없이는 한걸음도 전진할 수 없다. 또, 두 후보가 힘을 합쳐 어떤 일을 할 것인지, 어떻게 할 수 있는지에 대한 합의가 없다면 단일화의 의미도 사라진다. 나는 옳고 너는 그르다거나, 나만이 할 수 있다는 식이어선 곤란하다. 서로 공격하는 흠집내기여서도 외면을 받게 된다.
이번 단일화 논의는 두 후보로 대표되는 세력에겐 마지막 기회일 수 있다. 단일화에 실패하면 그 좌절과 실망감으로 두 후보는 지금보다 더 지리멸렬을 겪게 될 것이다. 이는 이른바 민주개혁 세력의 몰락으로 이어지게 된다. 단일화 논의를 통한 돌파구는 단일화가 성공했을 때만 가능하다고 봐야 한다. 당장의 대선은 물론 장차를 봐서도 그러하다.
두 후보가 접점과 방향이 확인되면 결단을 망설이지 말아야 할 이유도 여기 있다. 여론조사 결과를 기다리자거나 대선 이후의 정치적 득실 따위를 따지려 하다가는 국민의 감동을 얻지 못하게 된다. 그 시한은 이번 대선의 부재자 투표가 시작되는 오는 13일로 봐야 할 것이다.
