The regular prosecution’s investigation into the BBK stock price manipulation case appears to be closing in on the key aspects of the case. While it has yet to be officially confirmed, there has reportedly been progress in retracing the money trail from MAF Fund to LKe Bank via A.M. Pappas. This could be an important clue in sorting out the information prosecutors have on suspicions that Grand National Party presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak has equity in DAS in a borrowed name and his relationship to the BBK case. Also, prosecutors have established that the personal stamp and han’geul (the Korean alphabet) handwriting on the alleged BBK side agreements are indeed identical to Lee’s stamp and handwriting as used on official documents known to be authentic. It is now difficult for the GNP to claim the documents are “fabrications,” as it has long alleged.
It has gotten to the point where the explanations issued all this time by the GNP and Lee himself have to be held largely in suspicion. In other words, they can no longer convince the country otherwise by saying little more than that Kim Kyung-jun is a “con man” or that the documents are “forgeries.” In an interview over the airwaves just the other day Lee said that questions about the case “have nothing to do with the essence of the election” and that he “doesn’t need to answer” them, avoiding the case because he continues to struggle to ignore their seriousness in what is a most irresponsible attitude, because vacillating around on the issue is not going to make the suspicions go away. Kim Kyung-jun is reportedly telling prosecutors that Lee had a bigger hand in what happened than just initiating the money flow, meaning he is saying that Lee is the main culprit and he is just an accomplice.
The way Lee could rid himself of these allegations would be for him to explain things to investigators from the prosecution in person. The nature of the case makes it such that it would be hard to make complete conclusions about the suspicions without testimony from Lee himself. He should not just go on hiding behind the layer of protection provided him by being a presidential candidate. If he is going to, as he says, put the presidency on the line, then would that not first require an real investigation?
이명박 후보 직접 조사는 불가피하다
비비케이(BBK) 주가조작 사건에 대한 검찰 수사가 사건의 핵심에 접근하고 있는 듯하다. 아직 공식 확인된 것은 아니지만, 검찰은 ㈜다스에서 마프펀드와 에이엠파파스를 거쳐 엘케이이뱅크, 이뱅크증권중개로 흘러간 돈의 흐름 추적에서 진전을 보고 있다고 한다. 이런 자금 흐름은 이명박 한나라당 대통령 후보의 ㈜다스 차명보유 의혹과 비비케이 사건 관련 정도를 가리는 데 중요한 단서가 될 수 있다. 또, 검찰의 감정 결과 이 후보와 김경준씨 사이 한글 이면계약서에 찍힌 이 후보의 도장이 다른 공식문서들에 찍힌 도장과 같다는 잠정 결론이 내려졌다고도 한다. 한나라당의 애초 주장과 달리 이를 ‘위조’라 하긴 어렵게 된 것이다.
이쯤 되면 한나라당이나 이 후보 쪽이 그동안 해 온 해명이 크게 의심을 받게 된다. “김경준은 사기꾼”이라거나 “위조”라는 식의 주장만으론 국민을 납득시킬 수 없게 됐다는 얘기다. 이 후보가 엊그제 방송 인터뷰에서 이 사건과 관련한 질문에 “본질과는 관계없다”, “대답할 필요가 없다”는 등 비켜가려고만 한 것도, 사태의 심각성을 애써 외면하려는 무책임한 태도다. 뭉개어서 의혹을 덮을 수 있는 단계를 지났기 때문이다. 김경준씨 역시 검찰 조사에서 이 후보가 돈의 흐름을 알았음은 물론이고 그 이상의 구실을 했다는 주장을 펴고 있다고 한다. 주가조작 사건의 주범은 이 후보고, 자신은 종범에 불과하다는 것이다.
이런 의혹을 말끔하게 풀자면 이 후보가 직접 해명하고 검찰 조사에 응해야 한다. 사건의 내용을 보면, 핵심 당사자인 이 후보의 진술 없이는 검찰수사가 의혹을 남기지 않은 채 마무리되긴 어렵다. 이 사건에 대통령직을 걸겠다는 게 진심이라면 대통령 후보라는 가림막 뒤에 머물러 있을 일이 아니다. 수사가 제대로 이뤄지게 하는 게 책임있는 태도다.
