As of yesterday the Migrant Worker’s Hospital in Seoul’s Garibong-dong has been open for three years. It was founded in 2004 as a weekend clinic, when the Rev. Kim Hae-seong of the Migrant Worker’s House decided he could no longer watch foreign workers lose their lives because they had to leave trivial medical problems unattended. At the time, the clinic worked in fear, never knowing when it might have to close its doors, but since then, 82,000 people have used its services, an average of more than 200 a day. With only four full-time doctors and has truly been performing miracles.
외국인노동자병원이 이뤄낸 작은 기적
서울 가리봉동 ‘외국인 노동자 전용 의원’이 엊그제 개원 3년을 맞았다. 사소한 질병을 제때 치료하지 못해 목숨까지 잃는 외국인 노동자들의 딱한 사정을 보다못해 한국 외국인근로자 지원센터 대표인 김해성 목사가 나서서 2004년 주말진료소를 연 것이 시작이었다. 당시만 해도 언제 문을 닫을지 모를 형편이었으나 그동안 거쳐간 환자가 8만2천여명으로 하루 평균 200명이 넘는다. 상근의사가 네 사람에 불과한 이 작은 의원급 병원이 실로 기적 같은 일을 해 온 것이다.
