he best way to not be treated so coldly anymore would be to free ourselves from the TOEFL obsession. If you are going to study in the U.S., the TOEFL is unavoidable, but there is no reason to make it the test of choice for foreign language high schools and universities within Korea requiring an English entrance examination. Korean educational institutions need to wake up. At this point, it would be worth considering developing a Korean standard English language test. There’s TEPS (the Test of English Proficiency developed by Seoul [N]ational [U]niversity), but is not enough to be an alternative to the TOEFL. That being the case, it might be worth considering having major Korean universities jointly develop a test and have it supported by the government or the business sector. It is time for Korea’s adults to make sure young people no longer have to suffer in anxiety because of something like registering for the TOEFL.
더는 방치할 수 없는 지경에 이른 ‘토플 대란’
푸대접을 받지 않으려면, 토플시험 집착에서 벗어나는 것이 최선이다. 미국 유학을 가려면 어쩔 수 없이 토플을 봐야겠지만, 외고나 대학에서까지 굳이 이 시험을 표준으로 삼을 이유는 없다. 국내 교육기관들의 각성이 필요한 대목이다. 이참에 국내에서 표준적인 영어시험을 개발하는 것도 검토할 필요가 있다. 서울대에서 만든 텝스 같은 시험이 있지만 토플을 대체할 정도는 못된다. 그렇다면 국내 주요 대학들이 공동으로 시험을 개발하고 정부나 기업 등에서 지원해 정착시키는 방안 따위를 생각할 수도 있겠다. 이제 어른들이 나서, 학생들이 토플 접수 때문에 발을 동동 구르는 일이 더는 없게 해줘야 한다.
