Despite the increase in the number of international visitors and annual tourism revenue, the actual amount of money exchanging in island's casino businesses has greatly diminished. This was because two casinos suspended operation and there has been a steady decrease in the number of Japanese tourists who visit casinos due to the weakened Japanese yen against the won. According to the Jeju Branch of the Bank of Korea(BOK), the amount of money exchanged by the region's foreign-exchange services in 2006 fell 14.8 percent year-on-year to $172 million. As of the end of last year, 94 exchange merchants were registered with the Jeju Branch of BOK.
엔화약세로 도내 카지노 환전액 감소
외국인 관광객 수 및 관광수입액 증가에도 불구, 도내 카지노 2개 업체의 휴업 및 엔화약세 등으로 일본인관광객의 카지노 이용이 줄면서 카지노업체의 환전실적이 크게 감소했다. 한국은행제주본부에 따르면 2006년중 도내 환전영업자를 통한 외화 환전액은 1억7200만달러로 전년대비 14.8% 감소했다. 외국인관광객 1인당 환전액도 374달러로 전년도 533달러보다 29.8% 줄었다. 한편 지난해말 기준 한국은행제주본부에 등록한 도내 환전영업자는 94개 업체다.
