A public forum on the construction of naval bases in Jeju held in Student Cultural Center Jan. 30 appears to be fruitless, full of futile arguments. Some people point out that the Navy is forcing such an important issue one-sidedly which will affect the right to live and the fate of Jeju residents. We are not unaware that prevention is better than cure and now we are in a national security crisis including the North's missile launch and nuclear testing. Nonetheless, the situation is not that urgent enough to build naval bases in Jeju.
해군기지 토론회 도민 갈등만 확인
30일 오후 제주학생문화원에서 열렸던 제주해군기지 건설관련 '도민 대 토론회'는 생산성이 없는 소모적 논쟁만 불렀던 토론회였다는 평가다. 우선 제주도민의 생존권과 제주의 명운이 걸린 중대한 문제를 해군 측이 일방적으로 밀어붙이고 있다는 데서 나오는 지적이고 평가다. 물론 안보에 관한 한 유비무환(有備無患)의 필요성을 모르는바가 아니다. 그리고 북한 미사일 발사와 핵실험 등 국민적 안보위기 불감증을 '안보위기 상황'이라고 정리한다 해도 그렇다. 이것이 제주도에 군사기지를 건설해야 할 만큼 급박한 상황은 아니다.
