The nation is becoming a gambling republic. It is reported that the number of X-rated gambling halls is as many as 15,000 and over 23 trillion won worth of culture gift certificates for game room prizes have been issued from August last year to June this year nationwide. Considering the fact those gift certificates are presented to gambling winner after the game and then are converted to cash, which is revolved in the game room, it is unimaginable how much money is actually pumped into the game industries.
It is regrettable that the prosecution and the Board of Audit and Inspection launched probes into the adult arcade chain Sea Story, not until gambling becomes a serious social problem causing suicide and bankruptcy.
What makes us more worried is whether the investigation may end in scratching the surface because the allegation that the president's nephew and his key aids are involved in this scandal is raised.
One of the strange things about this case is how the machine pass the deliberation of the Korea Media Rating Board(KMRB) despite the opposition from former Culture and Tourism Minister Chung Dong-chae and former Vice Minister Yoo Jin-ryoung. Therefore, whether there was illegal lobbying or pressure from the state power in the course of deliberation process should be thoroughly discovered, and also the whys and hows of change in the relevant regulations concerning gift certificates at a critical juncture of this scandal should be found out. The biggest issue on the gambling game scandal is alleged involvement of Roh Ji-won, a nephew of President Roh Moo-hyun. In response, Cheong Wa Dae strongly denied his connection yesterday. However, it is not understandable that he was able to obtain a seat on the board of directors and receive considerable amount of stock options although he didn't perform any particular role. About the reasons for his resignation from the company, some say one thing and others say another. It is time that these suspicions should be cleared away by close investigations, and related laws and policies should be revised fundamentally.

역시 가장 궁금한 것은 노무현 대통령의 조카 노지원씨의 관련 의혹이다. 청와대는 어제 청와대와 노씨의 관련 의혹을 강력히 부인했다. 그러면 노씨는 별달리 하는 일도 없이 등기이사란 직책과 상당한 스톡옵션을 받았다는 말인지 이해가 안 된다. 노씨의 퇴직 배경도 해당 기업과 본인, 청와대 측의 말이 엇갈린다. 이제 국회까지 진상을 따진다고 하니 이런 모든 의혹에 대해 철저히 진실을 밝히고 차제에 관련법과 정책도 근본적으로 손질할 수 있기를 바란다.
