A homeroom teacher in an elementary school in Jeju was under sentenced of probation for making his student lose hearing after a violent beating. On Sep. 6, the judge in the Jeju District Court sentenced the teacher to one year in prison with a stay of execution for two years. He had been indicted without physical restraint on a charge of injuring the student severely. The court’s decision gives a Jeju education community a shock because it is very rare that the present teacher was sentenced to imprisonment for violence toward the student. He will lose his job unless he appeals against the decision.
지법, 학생 때려 청력 잃게 한 교사 집유
초등학생을 때려 한 쪽 귀의 청력을 잃게 한 담임교사에게 집행유예가 선고됐다. 제주지방법원 제2형사부(재판장 고충정 수석판사)는 6일 오전 중상해 혐의로 불구속 기소된 김 모 교사(31)에 대해 징역 1년에 집행유예 2년을 선고했다. 교사가 학생을 폭행해 중상해를 가한 점 및 현직 교사가 징역형에 집행유예를 선고받기는 드문 일이어서 제주교육계에 주는 충격이 클 것으로 보인다. 1심에서 금고형 이상의 형을 선고받은 김 씨는 항소하지 않을 경우 교사직을 잃게 된다. <본지 9월 7일 기사>
