On December 14th , during the second day of inter-Korean Cabinet-level Meetings, cabinet ministers agreed to hold talks between the North and South Korean Red Cross organizations as well as reunite another group of Korean families separated by the Korean War in March of next year.
Delegates of both sides confirmed that they reached a tentative agreement and took an approach toward such humanitarian issues through a keynote address made at Seogwipo Lotte Hotel. South Korea suggested holding the 13th family reunion event around New Year’s holiday season from the start while also calling for the 7th Red Cross Talks.
However, North Korea expressed a preference to hold the Red Cross Talks and reunion of divided families in March, citing the weather would be too cold.
South Korea also emphasized that pain caused by the Cold War prisoners of war issue and North Korea’s abductions from the past should be healed through the keynote address.
내년 3월 이산가족 상봉
남북은 장관급회담 이틀째인 14일 첫 전체회의를 열어 내년 3월께 이산가족 상봉과 적십자회담을 열기로 사실상 합의했다.
양측 대표단은 이날 서귀포 롯데호텔에서 기조발언을 통해 이 같은 내용의 인도주의적 문제에 대해 같은 입장을 확인하고 의견을 접근했다. 남측은 당초 내년 설을 전후해 제13차 이산가족상봉행사 개최를 제의하는 한편 제7차 적십자회담 등을 요구했으나 북측은 날씨가 너무 춥다며 3월쯤 적십자회담과 함께 이산가족 상봉을 하자는 뜻을 나타낸 것으로 알려졌다.
남측은 이날 기조발언에서 국군포로와 납북자 등 과거 냉전으로 인한 상처도 조속히 치유해야 한다는 점을 강조했다.
