School days for elementary, middle and high schools will be reduced by 2 days a month starting next March.
On the 29th of November, the Jeju Province Office of Education said that the Ministry of Education and human Resources Development announced a ‘5-school day implementation program of the year 2006’ which aims to have 2 Saturdays a month without class. In regard to no-class-Saturdays, superintendents of education affairs in cities and provinces will be empowered to decide which Saturdays, taking into consideration the educational and social situations and conditions of the community.
With the 5 school day program expanded and implemented, an hour per week or 34 hours per year will be reduced compared with the present number of class hours. However, the total class hours for first and second year students of elementary schools will be maintained as they are.

내년 3월부터 모든 초,중,고교에서 주5일 수업이 한달에 2회로 확대 실시된다.
29일 제주도교육청에 따르면 교육인적자원부는 이 같은 내용을 골자로 한 ‘2006학년도 주5일 수업 실시 방안’을 발표하고 구체적인 휴업일은 시도 교육감이 지역 사회의 교육적, 사회적 여건을 종합적으로 감안해 지정하도록 했다.
주5일 수업의 확대 실시로 수업 시수는 주당 1시간, 연간 34시간 범위내에서 줄어들지만 초등학교 1,2학년의 수업 시간은 현행대로 유지된다.
