Every year cancelled diver’s licenses rise drastically because the majority of local divers’ demerits exceed the limit while some divers do not take the attitude test.
The Korean National Police Agency in Jeju said that cancellation cases of driver’s license reached 2768 cases in 2002, 3339 cases in 2003, 4400 cases in 2004, and 2577 cases as of the end of this July, indicating a continuous annual increase.
Among 13,084 cases of driver’s licenses cancelled for 3 year and 7 month periods, 10,013 cancellation cases (76.5%) were for exceeded demerits and 1622 cases (12.4%) for not taking an attitude test.
The police said that drivers do not pay enough attention to demerits, take them too lightly and feel that undergoing an attitude test is nuisance, which result in cancellation. As for other causes of license cancellations, 663 cases (5.1%) account for unlicensed driving, followed by 343 cases (2.6%) accounting from hit-and run accidents. A police officer said that “Drivers should pay attention to their demerits,” adding that police are willing to make an effort to help drivers cope with their demerits.
작년, 제주서 4400명 면허취소
도내 운전자 상당수가 벌점초과와 적성검사를 받지 않아 매년 면허취소가 급격히 늘고 있다.
제주지방경찰청에 따르면 운전면허 취소 건수는 2002년 2768명에서 2003년 3339명, 지난해 4400명, 올해 7월말까지 2577명 등 매년 급격히 증가하고 있다.
특히 3년 7개월 간 면허 취소된 1만 3084건 가운데 벌점초과가 1만 13건으로 76.5%를 차지했으며, 적성검사미필 1622건, 12.4%를 기록해 벌점초과와 적성검사미필이 면허 취소의 주된 이유로 분석됐다.
경찰은 운전자가 벌점관리를 소홀히 하거나 가볍게 생각하는 경우가 많고, 적성검사를 귀찮게 여겨 취소에 이르는 경우가 많다고 설명했다.
이밖에 무면허 운전 663건(5.1%), 뺑소니 343건(2.6%) 등의 순으로 나타났다.
경찰 관계자는 “벌점을 관리해야 할 운전자의 각별한 주의가 필요하다”며 “경찰 또한 운전자가 벌점을 제대로 관리할 수 있도록 많은 노력을 기울이겠다”고 말했다. <10월 4일 기사>
