With poisonous jellyfish scattered widely throughout coastal areas in Jeju, many people are repeatedly falling to victim to their stings. The Jeju Fire Department said that 7 swimmers enjoying a swim at Samyang beach in Jeju were stung by jellyfish on the afternoon of the 16th and received first aid from the 119 rescue crew on duty at the scene.
However, the rescue crew explained that the victims were not stung by a poisonous jellyfish as originally believed, but stung by a common non-poisonous jellyfish species.
The center also said that the victims injured by the jellyfish were not sent to a hospital because they did not show any significant symptoms after first-aid treatment. Prior to this incident, one of the 8 people stung by poisonous jellyfish at Iho Beach was carried to hospital, creating panic among beachgoers.
The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute conducting an investigation are very anxious because there are no proper measures to tackle the present jellyfish problem and are worried that further jelly fish attacks will reduce the number of vacationers visiting beaches and restaurants at the beach.
毒 해파리 또 출현
도내 전 연안해역에 독성유해 해파리가 광범위하게 분포된 가운데 이로 인한 피해가 잇따르고 있다.
제주도소방재난관리본부에 따르면 16일 오후 제주시 삼양해수욕장 해안에서 물놀이를 즐기던 Y군(16.제주시) 등 7명이 해파리에 쏘여 현장 근무중인 119구급대에 의해 치료를 받았다.
구급대는 그러나 문제의 독성이 강한 ‘작은 부레관 해파리’가 아닌 일반 해파리 종으로 판명 된데다 이들이 응급처치를 받은 후 큰 이상 증세가 없어 병원으로 후송하지는 않았다고 설명했다. 이에 앞서 이호 해수욕장에서는 8명이 ‘작은 부레관 해파리’에 쏘여 이중 1명이 병원으로 후송되는 등 해수욕장을 찾은 피서객들이 해파리 공포에 시달리고 있다.
특히 실태조사를 벌이고 있는 국립수산과학원은 현재 이 같은 해파리를 퇴치할 마땅한 대책이 없는 상태여서 해수욕장내 계절음식점 등은 피서객들이 줄지 않을까 노심초사하고 있다.
