All the fake traffic surveillance cameras that have been installed on major roads in Jeju will be removed, leaving only real functioning ones.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced on the 29th that the agency would remove 28 fake cameras out of the 119 automated surveillance cameras established in Jeju Province.
The Agency operating and managing the cameras and Jeju Government said that due to a budget shortage, they had to set up inoperative replica speeding cameras in some places where traffic accidents occur frequently. Even when cameras installed for actual operation are worn out, they have not been removed but used as fake cameras to deter speeding.
Even though inoperative speeding camera use is justifiable for preventing accidents, the agency and government are criticized for deceiving Jeju islanders by setting up inoperative speeding cameras.
A police official said that the agency would strengthen safety through improving road structure and reinforce programs for traffic safe facilities in places where replica cameras are removed.
'가짜과속카메라' 철거
제주도내 주요 도로에 설치된 모형 교통단속 카메라가 모두 사라지고 진짜만 남게 된다.
제주지방경찰청은 도내에 설치돼 있는 모형 무인단속 카메라 119대 가운데 가짜인 28대를 자진 철거키로 했다고 26일 밝혔다.
무인단속 카메라를 운영. 관리해 온 경찰과 지자체 등은 예산 부족을 이유로 일부 교통사고 다발지역에 자동촬영이 가능한 교통단속 카메라 대신 작동이 되지 않는 모형 카메라를 설치해 왔다.
또 실제 작동하던 카메라도 수명이 다했을 경우 철거하지 않고 모형 카메라로 활용한 경우도 있었다.
이로 인해 교통사고 예방이라는 명분에도 불구하고 모형 카메라를 설치. 운영해오며 도민을 속이고 있다는 지적을 받아 왔다.
경찰 관계자는 “모형 카메라가 철거되는 곳에 한해 도로구조 개선과 교통안전시설 보강사업을 벌여 안전성을 높여 나가겠다”고 말했다.
