The Jeju Provincial Police Agency said on the 17th that it had been clamping down on bogus pensions on the Internet to prevent victimization during the vacation season.
After last year’s increase, the police expect crimes to increase sharply this year as well. These crimes involve con artists posting pictures of phantom pensions or home-stays on the internet, receiving deposits worth tens of thousands of Korean Won and then vanishing with the vacationers’ money.
To prevent these crimes, the police decided to launch an investigation. The police said that it is easy to be taken in because no difference exists between bogus and legitimate websites. They also request vacationers to be suspicious of any website which insists that they pay the deposit in cash not by credit.
경찰, ‘인터넷 유령펜션’단속
제주지방경찰청은 휴가철 ‘인터넷 유령 펜션’으로 인한 피해를 막기 위해 수사를 벌이고 있다고 17일 밝혔다.
경찰은 지난해에 이어 올해도 인터넷을 통해 있지도 않은 펜션이나 민박 사진을 올려놓고 피서객들에게 수십 만원의 예약금을 받은 뒤 달아나는 수법이 기승을 부릴 것으로 예상, 수사에 나섰다고 설명했다.
경찰은 이와 같은 사이트가 일반 사이트와 별 차이가 없어 속기 쉽다며, 예약금을 신용결제가 아니라 현금으로 하도록 하는 사이트는 일단 의심을 해봐야 한다고 당부했다.
