No sign of mutual concession has been seen in the dispute over natural gas exploration in the East China Sea between China and Japan. To address the dispute of gas exploitation in the East China Sea, China and Japan began the second round of two-day talks in Beijing, China on May 31th.
Since both countries are in a tense tug of war over gas field development rights, whether an appropriate compromise can be reached is yet to be known.
China has resumed its natural gas development project in the Chunxiao gas field, located 4 kilometers inside the Chinese side of the maritime boundary between the two nations.
Before the commencement of the China-Japan talks, Kyodo News Agency in Japan criticized China’s commencement of the gas field development program and expressed concern by saying, “China is trying to monopolize natural gas exploration in the East China Sea.”
Members of the Japanese Parliament/Assembly plan to strongly demand that China halt the gas development program.
China and Japan are ranked 2nd, and 3rd respectively in terms of world oil consumption.

‘가스개발권’두고 팽팽한 줄다리기
중국과 일본이 동중국해 가스탐사 분쟁에 타협의 기미를 보이지 않고 있다. 중국과 일본은 31일 동중국해 가스 탐사 분쟁 조율을 위해 이틀 간의 2차 협상을 중국 베이징에서 시작했다.
그러나 양국은 가스전 개발권을 서로 주장하며 팽팽한 줄다리기를 하고 있어 적절한 타협안을 마련할지는 미지수다.
중국은 지난 23일부터 양국간 영해 중간선에서 중국쪽으로 4킬로미터 떨어진 ‘춘샤오’ 가스전에서 개발공사를 재개한 바 있다. 이로 인해 일본 교도통신은 양국 회담이 시작되기 전 중국이 개발을 재개한 것을 비난하며 “중국이 동중국해 가스개발의 이익을 독점할 것”이라며 우려를 표명했다.
일본 의원들도 중국의 가스전 개발 중단을 강력하게 촉구할 예정이다.
중국과 일본은 각각 세계 2, 3위의 최대 석유소비국이다.
