The death of a sex worker

A few days ago, the dead body of a woman in her thirties was discovered in a Seoul neighborhood known for high levels of prostitution. The police said they believe she was murdered while with a client. They also said the woman left this neighborhood a few years ago, then returned last year and resumed work as a sex worker. Our society had been doing its best to ignore them, as if they were aspects of the past that no longer existed, but the doors of brothels have remained open and prostitution has openly continued. This sad death may be an indictment of this fact.

한 집창촌 여성의 죽음

서울의 한 성매매 집결지에서 엊그제 30대 여성이 숨진 채 발견됐다. 경찰은 성매매를 하다 남성에게 피살된 것으로 보고 있다. 피살된 여성은 몇 년 전 이곳을 떠났다가 지난해 돌아와 다시 성매매를 했다고 한다. 마치 존재하지 않는 과거의 일인 양 우리 사회가 애써 외면해왔지만, 집창촌은 여전히 존재했고 성매매는 버젓이 계속되고 있었던 것이다. 안타까운 죽음은 그 고발일 수 있다.
