South Korea-U.S. alliance has taken a wrong turn

Yesterday, a highly publicized event was held to praise the South Korea-United States alliance on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. The South Korean foreign and defense ministers and the U.S. secretaries of state and defense visited Panmunjeom, located in the middle of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), and emphasized their determination to fulfill their security pledge. It is rare for the U.S. secretaries of state and defense to hold meetings with other countries in this type of “2 plus 2” format. However, despite this outward appearance, the situation within and outside the two countries is prompting concerns that the alliance has moved outside the bounds of its proper function.

궤도 이탈 우려되는 한-미 동맹

어제 한국전쟁 발발 60주년을 계기로 한-미 동맹을 평가하는 자못 화려한 행사가 벌어졌다. 두 나라 외교·국방장관은 판문점을 함께 방문해 안보공약 이행 의지를 부각시켰다. 미국의 외교·국방장관이 다른 나라와 ‘2+2’ 형식으로 회의를 하는 것도 드문 일이다. 하지만 이런 겉모습과는 달리 나라 안팎의 상황은 한-미 동맹이 제 궤도에서 벗어나는 것 아니냐는 우려를 불러일으키고 있는 게 현실이다.
