Samsung's donation should not be a temporary measure

 The Samsung group is a conglomerate that represents Korea. The corporation influences the nation's production, export and employment so enormously that it could control the state economy. However, a strong crosswind of public opinion made such a powerful Samsung group drop its head. Yesterday at the press conference the corporation announced some measures to get rid of 'an atmosphere of anti-Samsung in the nation apologizing for its provision of illegal political funds in the last presidential election, expediently allocating convertible bonds of Everland, and the “X-file” incident. It has decided to donate a total of 800 billion won, contribute to public welfare, withdraw its lawsuits against the government regarding the Fair Trade Law and the gift tax and reform its structure. It seems to offer almost all proposals it can make but the issue of managerial rights. Samsung is hoping that its announcement will melt public sentiment against the corporation. We also feel the same way because it is not desirable for both Samsung itself and nation's economy that many people show their antagonism toward Samsung's illegal managerial practices. In order to make its desire become a reality, most of all, the corporation has to make it clear that those determinations should not end up with desperate countermeasures or temporary efforts, and only by putting its decisions into practice through close follow-up measures, it can prove that such concerns are not necessary any more.

 It had once declared the donation from the Lee family's fortunes when faced with Samsung Motor case. However its contribution hasn't been made yet, and now it prepares a lawsuit against creditors, as a result, leaving room for people's distrust. At his arrival a few days ago, chairman Lee Kun-hee said "the whole responsibility lies with me". We hope that he would apply such modest attitude to corporation management and also respond to the prosecution's investigation voluntarily confessing all his faults honestly. This is the only way for Samsung to regain support from the nation.

사회 환원 발표, 위기 모면용 안되려면

 삼성그룹은 한국을 대표하는 기업이다. 생산·수출·고용 등 어느모로 보나 삼성은 나라 경제를 쥐락펴락하다시피 할 정도로 그 영향력이 막강하다. 그런 삼성이 여론의 역풍에 밀려 머리를 수그렸다. 삼성은 어제 기자회견을 통해 불법 대선자금 제공, 에버랜드 전환사채 편법 배정, 안기부 Ⅹ파일 파문 등에 대해 사과하면서 이른바 ‘반(反)삼성 분위기’ 해소대책을 발표했다. 8천억원 규모의 사회기금 헌납, 사회공헌 확대, 공정거래법 헌법소원 및 삼성 SDS 증여세 부과 취소소송 취하, 그룹 구조 개편 등 경영권 문제를 제외하고는 할 수 있는 일은 거의 다 내놓았다고 할 수 있다. 삼성은 이번 발표를 계기로 반삼성 여론이 누그러지기를 기대할 것이다. 우리 또한 그렇게 됐으면 하는 마음 간절하다. 삼성이 자신의 잘못된 경영 관행으로 인해 비난 여론의 표적이 되는 것은 삼성 자신을 위해서나 나라 경제를 위해서나 결코 바람직한 일이 아니기 때문이다. 하지만 그렇게 되기 위해서는 전제가 필요하다. 무엇보다 삼성의 이번 다짐이 위기 타개를 위한 고육책이나 1회용 세리머니로 끝나서는 안 된다는 점이다. 삼성은 구체적인 후속 계획을 통해 다짐을 실천으로 이어감으로써 이런 우려가 근거 없는 것임을 입증해야 한다.

 삼성은 과거 삼성자동차 사태 때에도 사과와 함께 이건희 회장의 사재 출연을 발표한 적이 있다. 그러나 지금까지도 이 문제는 해결되지 않아 채권단과의 법정 소송을 앞두고 있다. 사회 환원 발표가 위기 모면용이라는 의심을 받을 만한 소지를 남긴 것이다. 이 회장은 며칠 전 귀국하는 자리에서 “전적으로 책임은 나 개인에게 있다”고 했다. 그런 겸손이 삼성 경영에 어떤 식으로든 반영됐으면 하는 바람이다. 자신의 잘못을 거짓 없이 고백하는 차원에서라도 검찰 수사에 적극 협조하는 모습도 보여주어야 한다. 그것이 한국의 대표 기업 삼성이 진정으로 국민의 사랑을 받을 수 있는 길이다.
