WTO Certifies Jeju as Healthy City

Jeju City has been certified as a ‘Healthy City’ by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Celebrating the certification, Jeju City will launch the Healthy City Project to promote health and the environment.
Ahead of being certified and joining the Alliance for Healthy Cities, Jeju Province conducted research on the actual condition of health services and medical care including a survey of residents’ health problems in collaboration with the medical school of Cheju National University. In addition, Jeju Province submitted a Healthy City Vision and Project, an impartial Health Service Policy Program, and Jeju provincial health guidelines to the WHO.     
This coming October 15th, Jeju Province will hold a ceremony declaring its pledge for a healthy city as well as reciting the Jeju Declaration and the Healthy City Charter. Keiko Nakamura, Head of the Secretariat of the WHO Alliance for Healthy Cities in the South Pacific region will be attending the ceremony. Jeju explained the certification by pointing out that Jeju will separately initiate a program to reduce harmful environmental factors having a negative impact on health.

제주도가 세계보건기구(WHO) 의 ‘건강도시’로 인증을 받았다. 제주도는 건강도시 인증을 계기로 본격적으로 건강. 환경을 고려하는 ‘건강도시 프로젝트’를 추진하게 된다.
건강도시 가입. 인증에 앞서 제주도는 제주대학교 의과대학과 공동으로 도민의 건강문제 파악 등 보건의료 실태조사를 벌였고 도 정책 의지를 담은 건강지표를 비롯해 건강도시를 향한 비전 및 계획, 지역. 계층간 차별없는 공평한 건강서비스 정책 추진계획 등을 WHO에 제출했다.
이와 관련 도는 다음달 15일 종합경기장에서 WHO 서태평양지역 건강도시연맹 사무국장인 일본인 게이코 나까무라 교수 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘건강도시 제주 선언 및 헌장낭독 등 건강도시를 향한 다짐을 선포’하는 기념식을 열기로 했다.
제주도는 “건강에 영향을 미치는 위해 환경을 줄여나가는 사업을 별도로 추진하게 된다”고 지정 의미를 소개했다.     <본지 9월 23일 기사>
