Jeju Islanders’ Support Critical for Jeju Air

The local air-carrier Jeju Air, a joint venture between Jeju Province and Aekyung Group, was granted a license for regular air transportation by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation on August 25th.  Since there has been a backlash by Jeju islanders against raises in airfares by the two major carriers in present operation, Jeju Province listened to their demands and decided to invest in the development of a local airline.  The green-lighting of this regular air service is the result of the demands by Jeju Islanders.  For this reason, Jeju Islanders wish Jeju Air success in establishing and operating air services.
Despite starting on a small scale with five turboprop planes each seating 75 passengers, it will secure short, low-fare trips to the mainland for Jeju residents.  Jeju Air announced that the carrier will make its maiden flight in June next year. The air fare is priced low at only 70% of the fares of current air carriers.  A single air ticket from Jeju to Gimpo Airport is expected to be about KRW 50,000 which will alleviate the burden on Jeju residents traveling by air.  We Jeju islanders would like to heartily celebrate Jeju Air’s license approval. 
We also hope that the launch of Jeju Air will usher in an era of low-cost travel and live up to Jeju residents’ wishes through its successful operation.  Obviously, the carrier will experience many trials and errors upon its launch and have to face unexpected issues that will spring up.  There will be jealous looks and interruptions from the established air carriers.  However, it is hoped that Jeju Air will not be discouraged and learn to overcome these obstacles in a sensible and patient manner.
        As much cooperation and support as possible from Jeju Islanders are also needed for Jeju Air’s successful operation because Jeju Air’s success is linked to Jeju islanders’ sense of pride.

‘제주에어’에 도민적 관심 필요

제주도와 애경그룹이 합작 설립한 지역 항공사인 ‘제주에어’가 25일 건설교통부로부터 정기항공 운송 사업 면허를 받았다.
현재 운행중인 양대 항공사의 과도한 항공요금 인상에 반발하고 있는 제주도민들의 목소리를 받아들인 제주도가 추진했던 항공사다.
따라서 제주에어의 정기항공운송사업 면허는 제주도민들의 자존심이 일구어낸 산물이라 할수도 있다.

그렇기 때문에 제주도민들은 제주에어의 성공적 운항을 염원하고 있다.
비록 74인승의 터보프톱 5대의 작은 출발이지만 이 항공사가 도민들에게 싼 가격의 뭍나들이를 보장해 줄 것이라고 믿기 때문이다.
제주에어 측은 내년 6월 첫 취항한다고 밝혔다. 항공요금도 현행 민항의 70% 수준으로 싸다. 제주-김포간 편도요금인 경우 5만원대다.
그만큼 항공기를 이용하는 도민들에게 부담을 덜어주게 되는 셈이다.

이런 이유 등으로 우리는 제주에어의 정기항공 운항 사업 면허 취득을 진심으로 축하하고자 한다.                                                                                                                                                                      이와함께 저가 항공요금 시대의 문을 열고 있는 제주에어가 성공적 운영을 통해 도민의 염원을 담아내는 제주의 날개로 빛을 발하기를 기원하고자 한다.
물론 처음 시작하는 사업인 만큼 여러 시행착오와 예기치 못한 문제들이 돌출할지도 모른다. 기존 항공사들의 질시와 방해도 있을 것이다.

그러나 좌절하지 말고 인내를 갖고 이같은 문제들을 극복해나가는 슬기를 터득해야 할 것이다.
제주도민들도 애정를 갖고 제주에어의 성공적 운행을 위해 가능한 협조와 지원을 아끼지 말아야 할 것이다. 제주에어의 성공은 바로 제주도민의 자존심을 일으켜 세우는 것이기도 하기 때문이다.
