Pyongyang Expresses Will to Abolish Missiles

It has been reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is willing to abolish all the mid and long range missiles if diplomatic relations between North Korea and the United States are established and North Korea is recognized as an allied nation.

In a Cabinet meeting held in the Central Government Complex in Sejong-ro on the morning of the 20th, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young informed Government Information Minister Kim Chang-ho that “the North Korean leader is willing to dispose of all the long-range and inter-continental missiles, and only maintain missiles that a normal nation would possess.”

김정일 북한 국방위원장은 북미간 수교가 이뤄지고 우방국가가 되면 중장거리 미사일을 모두 폐기처분할 용의가 있다는 의견 표명을 한 것으로 전해졌다.

정동영 통일부장관은 20일 오전 세종로 청사에서 열린 국무회의에서 김 위원장이 “일개 국가가 가질 수 있는 미사일만 갖고 장거리 미사일과 대륙간 미사일은 다 폐기하겠다”는 말을 소개하면서 이같이 말했다고 김창호 국정홍보처장이 전했다.
